Today I will introduce you to a dear lady. Carolyn Buono is a woman who works tirelessly for others. She is retired from the military and her career as a Pharmacist, but I would wager she puts in more hours now than she did when she was pursuing her career. Carolyn revels in doting on her dogs – she has quite a number, but each has a story and it is as special to her as the next. Purebreds, strays, rescues – all are cared for and loved to pieces!
This would be a lovely story of a loving woman if we stopped right there. But there is so much more. Carolyn trains each dog in obedience but also for compassionate service. She has dogs work in pet therapy, visiting Plaza West, Aldersgate Village and the VA Hospital’s PTSD unit. I personally have seen how these visits affect the elderly folks at care homes. The resident’s faces light up and many times it sparks a conversation of their own dogs. The visits offer comfort and a sense of familiarity. Who doesn’t feel better after petting a dog? Abbey, Jasmine and Maximus, all Golden Retrievers, accompany Carolyn now. Mercy, a lovely Lab mix, is in the process of training. She has her Canine Good Citizen award from the American Kennel Club so she is on her way!
In Part 2, I will tell you the rest of Carolyn’s story. Her journey of service takes her sometimes far away from home with her dogs. Truly amazing work!
